How Well Do You Know Your Plants?

Whether working to get rid of invasive plants, or working to foster native plants, the most game changing of skills for a gardener is differentiating between weeds and desirable plants starting in the earliest stages of life.

Shown here are coastal buckwheat (Eriogonum latifolium) seedlings in the cotyledon stage. If these were mistaken for weeds early on, it would be a huge loss to the birds, pollinators, and other wildlife that use this native plant. This kind of fine scale resolution of plants in the landscape only comes with years of work in the nursery and the field.
